More Than 90 Killed in Gaza as Israel Intensifies Airstrikes to Pressure Hamas

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Ministry of Health in Gaza reported on Saturday, April 19, 2025, that the latest Israeli airstrikes in Gaza had claimed the lives of more than 90 people over the past 48 hours. Israeli forces intensified their attacks to increase pressure on Hamas to release hostages and disarm.

According to Arab News, the casualties included 15 individuals killed in the Friday night strikes. Among the victims were women and children, some of whom had sought refuge in designated humanitarian zones.

At least 11 people died in the southern city of Khan Younis. Local hospitals reported that some of them were in a tent in the Mwasi area, home to hundreds of thousands of displaced people. Israel has designated this area as a humanitarian zone.

Four others died in separate attacks in the city of Rafah, including a mother and her daughter. The deaths were confirmed by the European Hospital, where the bodies were taken.

For six weeks, Israel has also imposed a blockade on Gaza, preventing the entry of food and other supplies.

This week, aid groups expressed concerns. The United Nations stated that thousands of children were suffering from malnutrition, with most people barely eating once a day due to dwindling supplies.

Last Friday, the Head of the World Health Organization's Eastern Mediterranean Office, Hanan Balkhy, urged the newly appointed US ambassador to Israel, Mike Huckabee, to lift the blockade on Gaza to allow medical supplies and other aid to enter the territory.

“I would wish for him to go in and see the situation firsthand,” she says.

According to The Times of Israel, Huckabee visited the Western Wall, the holiest Jewish prayer site in the Old City of Jerusalem, during his first appearance last Friday. He inserted a prayer note in the wall, reportedly handwritten by U.S. President Donald Trump.

Huckabee stated that all efforts were being made to bring back the remaining hostages held by Hamas.

The war in Gaza began on October 7, 2023, when an attack occurred in southern Israel, killing around 1,200 people and resulting in the kidnapping of 251 people. Most of the hostages have been freed through ceasefire agreements or other deals.

According to Gaza’s Ministry of Health, Israeli airstrikes have killed more than 51,000 Palestinians so far, the majority of whom are women and children.

The ongoing war has severely damaged much of Gaza's land and crippled its ability to produce food. In addition, it has displaced around 90 percent of the population internally, forcing hundreds of thousands to live in tent encampments and buildings reduced to rubble.
