TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) reported that a tectonic earthquake shook the Nagan Raya region of Aceh on Saturday, October 25, 2025, at 11:56:28 a.m. local time. The agency's initial analysis updated the earthquake's magnitude to 4.9.
The earthquake's epicenter was located on land in Nagan Raya, Aceh, at coordinates 4.43 degrees North and 96.51 degrees East, with a shallow depth of 10 kilometers.
"Considering the location of the epicenter and the hypocenter depth, the earthquake is classified as a shallow earthquake caused by the activity of the Great Sumatra Fault, South Aceh Segment," said BMKG official Daryono in his statement on Saturday, October 25, 2025.
He added that the source mechanism analysis indicates the earthquake had a strike-slip mechanism.
The tremor was felt in North Aceh and Nagan Raya at an intensity of III MMI (Modified Mercalli Intensity), meaning it was clearly felt inside buildings and felt like a passing truck. In the Bener Meriah and Central Aceh regions, the intensity was recorded at II–III MMI, with similar sensations reported inside buildings.
"Modeling results indicate that this earthquake does not have the potential to cause a tsunami," Daryono confirmed.
As of 12:25 PM local time, BMKG monitoring has not detected any aftershock activity, and there have been no immediate reports of damage caused by the earthquake.
Daryono urged the public to remain calm and only rely on verified information. He also advised checking the structural integrity of buildings to avoid entering those that might be damaged or cracked as a result of the earthquake.
