Five Students Named Suspects for Parliament Gate Vandalism

7 hours ago 1

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Police have identified five students as suspects in the vandalism during a demonstration in front of the Pancasila Gate at the Parliament Complex, Central Jakarta. They are suspected of spray-painting the gate, throwing rocks, and setting tires on fire outside the complex.

Initially, eleven people were involved in the demonstration in front of the House of Representatives (DPR) around 4:00 PM Western Indonesian Time (WIB) on Friday, May 9, 2025. Five of them were allegedly involved in the vandalism and were all arrested on the same day.

"Investigators concluded that five individuals could be designated as suspects under Articles 160, 170, and 406 of the Criminal Code," said Deputy Chief of the Central Jakarta Metropolitan Police, Adj. Sr. Comr. Danny Yulianto, during a press conference on Monday, May 12, 2025.

The five suspects are AIK (21), JK (22), SS alias M (19), SBR (25), and MWS (20).

According to the police chronology, AIK purchased used tires, Pylox spray paint, and gasoline, and set the tires on fire. "During the incident, AIK poured a liquid believed to be gasoline haphazardly, accidentally touching officers and fellow demonstrators," said Danny.

Suspect JK is allegedly the field coordinator and painted the Pancasila Gate. SS alias M is accused of throwing rocks at and spray-painting the Pancasila Gate.

SBR and MWS are both suspected of throwing large rocks at the Pancasila Gate. "As for the other seven individuals, we have questioned them, and as of now, they are considered witnesses and have been sent home," he added.

Police confiscated three used car tires, two cans of Pylox spray paint, one rock, one banner, one plastic bottle containing gasoline residue, and several clothing items worn by the suspects.

According to police reports, the suspects are from various universities. During the demonstration, they identified as the Association of Students Caring for Social Issues (Ikatan Mahasiswa Peduli akan Sosial).

The police did not detail the issues raised by the students during the protest. Danny claimed that the demonstration's substance was outside the Central Jakarta Metropolitan Police's jurisdiction, and they were only addressing the unlawful and dangerous actions. "The general issues they raised were related to government policies," he said.

Danny mentioned that police had already warned the demonstrators to stop. The House had requested police to prevent demonstrations at the complex that day due to meetings and international events. "The DPR also intends to file a report about this," he said.
