TEMPO.CO, Banyuwangi - The Mount Raung Volcano Observation Post (PGA Raung) has reported a thick white plume rising up to 1,000 meters above the summit over a 24-hour observation period ending early Tuesday, May 13, 2025.
Visual observations from the Raung post, located in Kampung Mangaran, Sumber Arum village, Songgon subdistrict, Banyuwangi regency, East Java, indicated that the volcano was clearly visible at times, with varying levels of fog cover from 0 to III.
“Thick white smoke was observed rising from the main crater, reaching heights between 100 and 1,000 meters above the summit,” said Benny Setyawan in a written report cited by Tempo on Tuesday.
Seismic monitoring recorded nine emission earthquakes, with amplitudes ranging from 4 to 9 millimeters and durations between 38 and 72 seconds. In addition, two deep tectonic quakes were detected, with amplitudes of 8 to 11 millimeters, S-P intervals of 18 to 27 seconds, and durations of 54 to 69 seconds.
The post also recorded one continuous tremor, with amplitudes between 0.5 and 10 millimeters, peaking at 1.5 millimeters. Despite these observations, Mount Raung remains at Alert Level II, or “Waspada,” with authorities advising the public and visitors to stay at least 3 kilometers away from the summit crater, avoid descending into the caldera, and refrain from camping overnight in the area.
Standing 3,332 meters above sea level, Mount Raung spans the administrative regions of Banyuwangi, Bondowoso, and Jember. The volcano, which features a vast caldera, last erupted two months ago on March 13, 2025.
That eruption produced a plume approximately 1,500 meters above the summit, or roughly 4,832 meters above sea level. During the eruption, nearby areas in all three regencies experienced direct impact.
According to information gathered by Tempo, seven subdistricts in Bondowoso fall within the disaster-prone zone: Sempol (Ijen), Sumberwringin, Sukosari, Tapen, Wonosari, Tlogosari, and Pujer.
In Banyuwangi, four subdistricts are considered at risk from Raung's eruptions: Songgon, Sempu, Glenmore, and Kalibaru. In Jember, the at-risk areas include Silo, Sumberjambe, and Ledokombo.
