TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The ERIA Government School held a seminar entitled Indonesia's Role in the Cambodian Peace Process at the ERIA office in Jakarta on Tuesday, April 29, 2025.

On May 6, the event opened a series of activities leading up to the ERIA Leadership Lecture featuring the President of the Senate of the Kingdom of Cambodia, Samdech Akka Moha Sena Padei Techo Hun Sen.

The seminar underlines Indonesia's important role in promoting peace and stability in Cambodia during the late 1980s and early 1990s, particularly through the "cocktail diplomacy" and its leadership in the Informal Meeting in Jakarta (IMJ).

In addition to facilitating Cambodia's path to reconciliation, these initiatives strengthened ASEAN's position as a driver of regional stability.

ERIA Government School Dean Nobuhiro Aizawa emphasized Indonesia's significant contribution, particularly through the Foreign Affairs Ministry and the Indonesian National Defense Forces (TNI).

"Indonesia's initiative in the Cambodian peace process is a monumental example of how constructive diplomacy and visionary leadership can bring stability and peace to a region amidst conflict," Aizawa said, as quoted from ERIA's official release.

Aizawa recounted that Indonesia's diplomatic efforts began under the leadership of Mochtar Kusumaatmadja, who initiated informal involvement.

This was then continued by former Foreign Minister Ali Alatas, who spearheaded the IMJ as a turning point in the peace process.

Not only that, Aizawa also mentioned that General LB Moerdani, who was then serving as Defense Minister, played a significant role by involving Vietnam representatives and strengthening ASEAN's position through strategic military diplomacy.

For Aizawa, this collective effort laid the foundation for today's Southeast Asian stability. "Unlike many other regions still grappling with territorial disputes and geopolitical tensions, Southeast Asia has successfully built enduring stability through a collective regional approach, in which Indonesia plays an active role," he said.

The seminar is part of ERIA's efforts to strengthen Southeast Asia's institutional memory through the Leadership Lecture Series.

The second edition of this series will feature Samdech Techo Hun Sen, who will reflect on his leadership in achieving peace and national reconciliation in Cambodia.

His insights are expected to provide valuable lessons for policymakers, academics, and young leaders throughout the region.

The ERIA Leadership Lecture Series was first launched on September 18, 2024, with former President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono as the keynote speaker.

This series provides a platform for high-level discussions on leadership, governance, and regional cooperation, contributing to the region's diplomatic and intellectual heritage.

Through upcoming seminars and Leadership Lectures, the ERIA Government School reaffirms its commitment to advancing Southeast Asia's journey towards deeper peace, stability, and regional cooperation.
