TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Indonesian government claims that the U.S.-imposed 32 percent tariffs do not affect the mineral and coal sectors, which the acting director-general of oil and gas at the Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources, Tri Winarno, says are not heavily dependent on trade relations with the United States.
"The crucial materials that support our mining activities, especially in the mineral and coal sector, do not come from the U.S.,” he said during a hearing with House Commission XII on Tuesday, May 6, 2025.
But Tri argued that the government must carefully assess the opportunities emerging from the levies. “For example, purchasing oil from the U.S. with high prices while at the same time they are absorbing our labor-intensive goods. Thus, the economy can still function," he said.
Regarding the plan to import oil, Tri stated that the Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources is still conducting a study together with the Coordinating Ministry for Economic Affairs. He mentioned that there are a number of important considerations to realize this plan, which involves a myriad of variables.
"We are calculating this together. The process is not simple, but we are in the process of arranging it to mitigate the impacts," he said.
Prior to this, Minister of Energy and Mineral Resources Bahlil Lahadalia proposed an increase in oil and gas imports from the U.S. to offset the trade balance of both countries. Bahlil proposed this in line with Trump’s plan to impose reciprocal tariffs due to trade deficit.
