TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - A tectonic earthquake with a magnitude of 4.6 shook the area of Padang Panjang, West Sumatra, on Saturday, April 19, 2025, at 8:47 p.m. WIB (Western Indonesian Time). Based on the analysis of the Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency (BMKG), the center of the earthquake was located at coordinates 0.44 degrees South Latitude and 100.45 degrees East Longitude.

The head of the Padang Panjang Geophysics Station, Suaidi Ahadi, said the epicenter of the earthquake was on land, precisely 6 kilometers northeast of Padang Panjang, with a depth of 10 kilometers. "Taking into account the location and depth of the earthquake center, this event is a shallow earthquake due to the activity of the Sianok Fault," said Suaidi.

The earthquake vibrations were strongly felt in several areas. According to BMKG's map of tremors, the earthquake was felt with an intensity of III-IV MMI in Padang Panjang, Bukittinggi, and Agam Regency. At this level, the vibration was palpably felt by many people inside their homes, as if there was a passing truck, or even windows, doors, or walls made noise.

Meanwhile, in Solok Regency, Padang, Padang Pariaman Regency, Pariaman, and Batusangkar, the earthquake was felt with an intensity of II-III MMI, where the vibration was felt by many people and light objects hanging swayed.

"As of 9:09:13 p.m. WIB, BMKG monitoring results have not shown any aftershock activity," added Suaidi.

Although there have been no reports of damage caused by the earthquake, BMKG advises the public to remain calm and not be influenced by unverifiable rumors.

"The public is advised to avoid buildings that are cracked or damaged due to the earthquake. Check and ensure that residential buildings are earthquake resistant, or there is no damage that endangers the stability of the building before returning indoors," said Suaidi.
