TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Minister of Primary and Secondary Education Abdul Mu'ti announced that coding and artificial intelligence (AI) will be introduced into the school curriculum beginning in the 2025/2026 semester. However, the subject will remain optional for now.
"The AI and coding curriculum has been completed, including the academic manuscript and learning outcomes. It is currently being finalized as a ministerial regulation," said Mu'ti during the National Education Day celebration with Google and YouTube at the Ministry of Education and Culture office in Jakarta, on Wednesday, May 7, 2025.
He noted that the draft regulation is in the harmonization stage with the Ministry of Law and other related institutions.
Mu'ti also welcomed collaboration with various parties to implement the new curriculum, given the wide availability of coding service providers in the community. "We have partnered with several stakeholders to ensure the implementation of coding education," he said.
Earlier, Mu'ti emphasized the importance of introducing coding and AI from the primary school level. Nevertheless, he stressed the need for clear guidance to ensure responsible use of technology in today’s digital era.
"Mastering technology is essential, even necessary. But its use must be directed toward positive and meaningful activities for the benefit of society," Mu'ti said at a press conference in Jakarta on February 2, 2025.
He also mentioned that the proposed plan has been fully supported by the Ministry of Communication and Digital in efforts towards digital literacy.
Both ministries agreed to synergize in creating a generation capable of utilizing technological advancements for positive purposes.
The plan to include coding and AI subjects in school curriculum is a proposal put forward by Vice President Gibran Rakabuming Raka.
"We must not lose to India. Once again, ladies and gentlemen, to achieve our "golden Indonesia", we need a golden generation. We want more experts in coding, AI, machine learning, and others," said Gibran while giving a speech during the coordination meeting for the evaluation of primary and secondary education in the Gandaria area, South Jakarta, on Monday, November 11, 2024.
