TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Indonesian Employers' Association (Apindo) agrees that Indonesia should intensify trade within ASEAN to anticipate the import tariff policies of the United States (US). Apindo Chair Shinta Kamdani stated that ASEAN is a very potential export market for Indonesia, especially for national business actors who are just starting to explore the export market.

According to Shinta, ASEAN has a more stable and relatively higher economic growth rate compared to other regions. "The market standards in ASEAN are generally not very different from Indonesia, making it much easier for national business actors to penetrate the export market," Shinta said when contacted on Saturday, April 25, 2025. In addition, she said, the geographic proximity makes the logistics burden of trade more efficient.

Shinta mentioned that the export potential to ASEAN is very large, especially for national manufactured products. She said this can be seen from manufactured products that have increasingly dominated exports to ASEAN over the past 10 years.

Some of these manufactured products include vehicles, electronic devices, processed food products, iron-steel-copper processed products, machinery components, processed tobacco products, as well as beauty products. "Although raw commodities such as crude palm oil (CPO) and its derivatives, fishery products, gold and pearls, coffee, tea, spices, and others still have significant exports," she said.

Previously, Coordinating Minister for Economic Affairs Airlangga Hartarto stated that Indonesia will increase trade within ASEAN. "This is our target because indeed developing countries and countries in the regional bloc are one of the shock breakers to restrain uncertainty and turmoil in the future," Airlangga said in a virtual press conference on Friday, April 25, 2025.

In addition, Airlangga mentioned that domestic business actors need to be prepared to seek new market alternatives and enhance competitiveness. According to Airlangga, this alertness is needed to anticipate the projected decline in global economic growth by the International Monetary Fund (IMF). The IMF has indeed revised its projection for global economic growth from 3.3 percent to 2.8 percent in response to US tariffs.
