Yemen's Houthi Missile Hits Israel's Ben Gurion Airport

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - A ballistic missile launched from Yemen struck the perimeter of Israel's Ben Gurion International Airport on Sunday, May 4, 2025. The attack damaged roads and vehicles, as well as halted air traffic.

As reported by Al Jazeera, the Israeli military confirmed that its defense system failed to intercept the projectile on Sunday morning. However, the military made several attempts to intercept it.

The missile strike resulted in eight people being wounded.

The Houthi group in Yemen has launched attacks on Israel in response to Israel's war and blockade in the Gaza Strip. The Houthi group claimed responsibility for launching the missile at Israel's busiest airport.

In a statement broadcast on television, Houthi military spokesperson Yahya Saree warned airlines that Ben Gurion Airport is no longer safe for air travel. The attack led to the shutdown of flights at the airport in central Israel. Some flights had to be diverted, and all entrances to the airport were temporarily closed while train travel to the site was halted.

Sirens blared in central Israel, prompting many people to move to shelters, according to Israeli media.

Video footage of the missile's impact site circulated on social media, showing the missile hitting a connecting road inside the airport's perimeter. Debris was scattered on the surrounding roads.

Israeli Defense Minister Israel Katz threatened to retaliate against the Yemen attack. "Whoever attacks us, we will hit back sevenfold," Katz said.

Benny Gantz, leader of the Israel Resilience Party and former member of the war cabinet, stated that the rocket attack by groups allied with Iran should be attributed to Tehran.

“It is Iran that is firing ballistic missiles at the state of Israel, and it must bear responsibility,” he said in a social media post without providing evidence. “The shooting at the state of Israel is bound to lead to a severe reaction in Tehran.”

Israeli onslaughts in Gaza have been ongoing for over 18 months, resulting in the deaths of at least 52,495 people. Among the victims, 57 died of starvation due to Israel's total siege since March 2, 2025, according to Palestinian officials.
