TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - There is a unique destination in the heart of London, England, for tourists who want to relive their teenage years. The Museum of Youth Culture, the world's first museum entirely dedicated to youth culture, is scheduled to open in December 2025 in the Camden Town area.
As reported by the Daily Mail, this 6,800-square-foot museum, which has been in development for two decades, will take visitors on a journey through time as they reflect on teenage life over the past 100 years. The museum aims not only to showcase the past but also to provide a participatory space for today's younger generation.
A Permanent Museum in Camden
The Museum of Youth Culture began as an online archive in 2015 and has hosted several pop-up exhibitions at iconic London locations, including the Barbican Centre and Carnaby Street. One of its notable projects was titled "I'm Not Okay: An Emo Retrospective," which highlighted the emo music era and teenage expressions during that time.
The establishment of a permanent branch in Camden marks a significant milestone for the museum. In the coming years, the organizers also plan to open new branches in Birmingham and Glasgow.
The museum will feature three main gallery spaces displaying typical teenage memorabilia. This memorabilia will range from band T-shirts and rave party flyers to school graduation uniforms. Additionally, there will be a free gallery space for young creators to exhibit their work, complete with a cafe and music shop that will host exhibitions, discussions, workshops, and community events.
Public Participation Space
Jon Swinstead, the founder of the Museum of Youth Culture, stated that the museum's main goal is to create a space for public participation, as well as to provide an opportunity for reminiscence. "This is more than a place to look back; it's a space to participate, contribute, and shape the cultural narrative together," he said.
Swinstead added that Camden has long been synonymous with music and youth culture in Britain, making it the perfect location for this museum.
As part of its participatory spirit, the museum also invites the public to contribute memories and personal items from their youth. This collection will be added to the documentation of cross-generational youth culture.
