TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Former Indonesian Finance Minister Sri Mulyani Indrawati has had her name dragged into the public spotlight after being mentioned in the latest round of the Epstein Files releases by the United States Department of Justice (DOJ) on January 30, 2026. The public is abuzz since the releases detailed the prominent financier Jeffrey Epstein's long history of sexual violence and sex trafficking case. Epstein himself died in 2019.
According to the official statement by the U.S. Department of Justice published on the Epstein Library at https://www.justice.gov/epstein, the newly released documents consist of more than three million pages, approximately 180,000 photos, and 2,000 videos.
This marks the largest publication since the Epstein File Transparency Act was enacted by the U.S. Congress on November 18, 2025. The archives contain various documents, ranging from reports by the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI), court transcripts, travel logs, email correspondence, to press clippings and analysis reports.
World Bank Group Archives
Based on Tempo's investigation of the documents, Sri Mulyani's name appears in three separate files. The first mention comes from the World Bank Group's internal archives, not from Jeffrey Epstein's personal documents. The archive consists of internal emails and institutional communication articles from the World Bank Group dated June 18, 2014.
The document named Sri Mulyani as the Managing Director and Chief Operating Officer (COO) of the World Bank Group. The archive discusses the launch of the President's Delivery Unit (PDU), a strategic unit responsible for monitoring development achievements and enhancing the institutional performance accountability.
In a statement quoted in the internal document, Sri Mulyani said, "The delivery unit will complement and strengthen our existing measurement mechanisms, including the scorecard. It will also make an important contribution to delivering on the goals our clients endorsed."
She also expressed her satisfaction that the International Development Association (IDA) commitment and speed of delivery of funds made the primary performance indicator, reflecting the streamlining of the World Bank's internal processes.
Mentions in News Clippings
The second mention of Sri Mulyani's name in the Epstein Files is contained in a news clipping from The New York Times titled "Pollution Killed 7 Million People Worldwide in 2012, Report Finds," published on March 25, 2014.
The third mention is also contained in a news clipping. Both articles discuss the serious impact of air pollution on global health based on the World Health Organization (WHO) report and World Bank study, focusing on Asian countries such as China and India.
In these articles, Sri Mulyani is named as the Managing Director of the World Bank, who provided insights into the challenges of financing reforms and urban governance in China. She said, "I don't think that, at the moment in this case, there is clarity of
when you are going to achieve what," referring to Chinese local governments' dependence on land acquisition to finance city infrastructure and the lack of clarity in the reform plan.
Other Indonesian Figures Named in Epstein Files
Apart from Sri Mulyani, several other Indonesian figures are also mentioned in the Epstein Files, with different contexts. According to the documents, the name Hary Tanoesoedibjo is mentioned in files discussing his business relationship with Donald Trump, including plans for the Trump Residences Indonesia project in Bogor and Bali. The documents also mention the purchase of Trump properties in Beverly Hills.
Eka Tjipta Widjaja's name appears in documents related to the sale of luxury properties owned by Donald Trump in 2009 to a Swiss entity associated with the Widjaja family. Meanwhile, the name of the 7th Indonesian President, Joko "Jokowi" Widodo, also appears in other documents, including news clippings and analysis reports on Indonesia's political and economic situation.
The name of Indonesia's 2nd President, Soeharto, also appears in a proposed book writing about him submitted to Jeffrey Epstein by someone named Gregory Brown.
According to the Epstein Files catalog, a search with the keyword Indonesia resulted in 902 files containing the names of Indonesian officials and entrepreneurs. So far, there is no evidence indicating a direct relationship between these Indonesian figures and Jeffrey Epstein.
