TEMPO.CO, Jakarta – Padjadjaran University (Unpad) in West Java, Indonesia, has formally allowed the use of artificial intelligence (AI) on campus, with strict guidelines to safeguard academic integrity.

Unpad Rector Arief Sjamsulaksan Kartasasmita said the university permits AI to be used “to the fullest extent possible,” provided it complies with institutional regulations. He delivered the statement during the orientation for new postgraduate students on Tuesday, February 10, 2026.

Under the university’s latest policy, AI use must adhere to principles of scientific integrity. Arief acknowledged that some students may feel pressured and turn to AI tools inappropriately, but stressed that ethical standards must remain paramount.

“It is our responsibility to teach students that scientific integrity comes first,” he said.

Arief emphasized that AI should function as a supporting tool rather than a substitute for genuine academic work. He noted that academic misconduct, such as plagiarism, existed long before AI technologies emerged.

“AI is only a tool. Even without AI, people could still cheat,” he said.

Transparency is a key requirement under Unpad’s policy. Students and lecturers must disclose the use of AI in producing academic work.

“Do not claim you did not use AI if you did. The use of AI in creating academic products must be declared,” Arief said.

He added that Unpad aims to actively participate in the growing AI ecosystem by integrating the technology into academic activities within a strong ethical framework. Failing to provide proper guidance, he warned, could encourage hidden or unethical use.

“It is better for us to facilitate and train users, and make its responsible use easier,” he said.

Arief also criticized emerging practices in which lecturers and students use AI tools to anticipate or generate examination questions and answers in advance, describing such behavior as undermining the credibility of higher education.

“Practices like this can degrade the dignity, integrity, and value of higher education institutions,” he said.

Meanwhile, Intan Nurma Yulita, Head of Unpad’s Center for Teaching and Learning Innovation, said the university is finalizing ethical guidelines that will regulate AI usage across faculties. The guidelines will require users to clearly state the extent and purpose of AI assistance in their academic work.

In the future, AI policies will vary by course. The upcoming rector’s regulation will classify which courses may freely use AI, which may use it partially, and which may prohibit it altogether.

“Each course will have different rules regarding AI usage,” Intan said.

She stressed that while AI can mimic human intelligence, critical thinking and intellectual responsibility must remain human-driven. Users are required to independently verify AI-generated output, even when using it to accelerate academic tasks.

Unpad also plans to provide AI training for both faculty members and students, and intends to subscribe to Scopus AI to support research activities.
