TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - U.S. Democratic Representative Ro Khanna took House floor on Tuesday to reveal the names of six 'wealthy, powerful men' that were originally redacted by the Department of Justice in the millions of files related to the late sex offender Jeffrey Epstein, famously dubbed the Epstein Files.
The files referenced by Khanna and reviewed by CBS News—which have now partially had their redactions lifted to reveal the six names—appear not to directly implicate the individuals in any crimes, and Khanna did not allege any specific criminal wrongdoing.
However, Khanna regarded the redaction as a failure by the Department of Justice, accusing it of protecting the individuals 'for no apparent reason' when releasing millions of documents about Epstein.
The six men mentioned by Khanna include billionaire Leslie Wexner, who headed the parent company of Victoria's Secret and employed Epstein to manage his finances.
There's also Sultan Ahmed bin Sulayem, the CEO of Dubai-based logistics company DB World. He also mentioned four lesser-known individuals: Salvatore Nuara, Zurab Mikeladze, Leonic Leonov, and Nicola Caputo.
Khanna said he came across the six names on Monday after visiting the Department of Justice with Republican House member Thomas Massie of Kentucky to view an uncensored version of the Epstein files.
These bipartisan lawmakers jointly sponsored legislation last year that mandated the U.S. Department of Justice to release nearly all of its investigative files on Epstein, with redactions allowed to protect the identities of victims and in some other circumstances.
After leaving the building, Khanna and Massie told reporters that they found the names after sifting through documents for part of the afternoon. They said there may be more names.
"And if we found six men that they were hiding in two hours, imagine how many men they are covering up for in those 3 million files," Khanna said on Tuesday.
On Monday night, after Massie pointed out three documents where the six names appeared, the Department of Justice partially lifted the redactions on those files.
The evidence included an FBI document from 2019 that referred to Wexner as a 'co-conspirator,' email correspondence between Epstein and bin Sulayem, and a list of 20 names that included four other men - though the context or purpose of the list was not entirely clear and appeared not to involve allegations.
Wexner—whose name is mentioned elsewhere in the documents—has long maintained that he cut ties with Epstein after his crimes were publicized. He has not been accused of any crimes.
CBS News has reached out to bin Sulayem for comment and is attempting to contact the other four individuals.
A Department of Justice spokesperson defended the handling of the files to CBS News, saying that the department always cautioned "that with 3.5 million pages, the teams may have inadvertently redacted individuals or left those unredacted who should have been."
The spokesperson added that four of the six names mentioned by Khanna "are only included in this one document out of all the files. Wexner is referenced nearly two hundred times in the files, and Sultan bin Sulayem appears over 4,700 times."
Since the Epstein Files Transparency Act was signed by President Trump in November, the U.S. Department of Justice has released around half of the records about Epstein and his convicted associate, Ghislaine Maxwell, out of approximately six million documents.
Some observers accused the department of excessive redactions in the files, while some of Epstein's victims' lawyers said the department failed to properly redact their clients' names before releasing the files into a government database.
Democratic House member Jamie Raskin of Maryland told reporters on Monday that he saw "names of lots of people who were redacted for mysterious or baffling or inscrutable reasons."
