TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Observed annually by Muslims worldwide, Ramadan is a holy month that honors the revelation of the first verses of the Qur’an, the sacred book of Islam, to the Prophet Muhammad.

As the ninth month of the Islamic calendar approaches, the countdown has begun, raising the question many are asking: when is Ramadan in 2026?

If you are part of the Muslim communities and are preparing to welcome the holy month of Ramadan, here are some things to note.

When is Ramadan in 2026?

Many forecasts, including The Alamanac, suggest that Ramadan in 2026 could begin at sundown on Tuesday, February 17. However, astronomers in the United Arab Emirates have said it would be “impossible” to sight the Ramadan crescent moon on that date.

In the Islamic calendar, the beginning of a new month is determined by the sighting of the crescent moon, meaning start dates can vary depending on local observations. As a result, the exact start of Ramadan may differ across regions.

The timing is especially significant, as Ramadan marks a month in which Muslims fast daily from dawn until sunset, abstaining from food and drink throughout the observance.

According to The Astronomy Centre based in Abu Dhabi, there will be one additional day from the initial date until Ramadan starts. The astronomers calculated this year’s Ramadan is likely to begin on Thursday February 19, as per Time Out

What is the Purpose of Fasting during Ramadan?

During Ramadan, fasting is required for healthy adult Muslims, though exemptions are made for those who are ill, pregnant, breastfeeding, traveling, elderly, or dealing with certain medical conditions.

Beyond abstaining from food and drink, the fast is intended to encourage self-discipline, spiritual reflection, gratitude, and empathy for those who are less fortunate.

Traditions of Ramadan

Each day of fasting begins with suhoor, a pre-dawn meal eaten before sunrise. The fast is typically broken at sunset with dates and water, followed by the main iftar meal.

Throughout the month, Muslims also observe taraweeh, voluntary night prayers performed after the isha prayer and unique to Ramadan. These prayers are commonly held in congregations at mosques, though they may also be performed at home, according to The Mirror.

Ramadan concludes with the celebration of Eid al-Fitr, which marks the first day of Shawwal, the 10th month of the Islamic calendar. Determined by the sighting of the new moon, Eid al-Fitr lasts for three days and is a time for prayer, gatherings, and celebrations with family and loved ones.
