TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - United States President Donald Trump continues to threaten Iran. He has stated that he will attack Iran if Tehran does not meet his demands on various issues, ranging from nuclear enrichment to ballistic missiles.
In his comments to the Israeli Channel 12, as reported by Al Jazeera, Trump hinted at taking aggressive action if no agreement is reached with Iran. "Either we reach a deal, or we’ll have to do something very tough," Trump told the media outlet.
Trump's statement was made as Iran's security chief, Ali Larijani, met with the Sultan of Oman, Haitham bin Tariq Al Said, to discuss the results of the talks between U.S. and Iranian officials last week. In recent weeks, Trump has threatened to increase U.S. military presence in the region, after sending a "massive armada" to the nearby waters, including the USS Abraham Lincoln, an aircraft carrier.
Trump also threatened to send a second aircraft carrier along with additional military assets to the Middle East amid escalating tensions with Iran. He stated that both sides expressed a desire to reach an agreement to prevent military confrontation, but reiterated that Iran must not possess nuclear weapons.
He also referred to the U.S. strike on Iran's underground nuclear facilities last summer. According to him, Tehran underestimated his readiness to use military force. "Last time, they didn’t believe I would do it," said Trump, as quoted by Channel 12 Israel, as reported by Al Arabiya. "They overplayed their hand."
The attack occurred while the U.S. and Iran were still engaged in indirect discussions regarding Tehran's nuclear program. Trump views the current situation as different. He claims that Iran is now far more eager to reach an agreement.
Trump said that Iran is eager to reach a deal, but it was warned that tough action would be taken if diplomacy fails.
Trump also confirmed that the option to deploy a second aircraft carrier to the Middle East is being considered as part of broader military preparations.
