TNI Condemns OPM Shooting That Killed Soldier in Yahukimo

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Indonesian National Armed Forces (TNI) strongly condemns the alleged shooting by the Free Papua Movement (OPM) against a military soldier from Kodim 1715/Yahukimo on Monday, June 16, 2025. The Head of Information Center (Kapuspen) of the TNI, Major General Kristomei Sianturi, stated that the separatist group's action lacked humanity.

According to him, TNI soldiers on duty in Papua were carrying out humanitarian tasks. The victim of this incident was Serka Seger Mulyana, who died as a result.

"The TNI strongly condemns the inhumane and brutal action carried out by the OPM," said Kristomei in his statement on Tuesday, June 17, 2025.

He stated that the victim was attacked and brutally assaulted by the OPM group at the Kali Biru Bridge, Dekai District, Yahukimo Regency. The victim was identified to have gunshot wounds on the right chest, slash wounds on several parts of the body, and stab wounds on the left chest.

Kristomei stated that at that time, Serka Seger Mulyana was attending the morning roll call at the headquarters of Kodim 1715/Yahukimo. The soldier who became the victim had been assigned to check on the condition of sick members of the Kodim.

Serka Seger, along with three other soldiers, departed for the Dekai Regional General Hospital to coordinate the procurement of medicine for the sick member. Serka returned to the headquarters alone to deliver the medical supplies riding a motorcycle.

However, according to Kristomei, Serka Seger was ambushed and shot suddenly by the OPM group led by Elkius Kobak in Yahukimo on his way back to the headquarters. "The body of Serka Seger was found on the roadside alongside his motorcycle," he said.

Kristomei mentioned that the victim was taken to the hospital, but his life could not be saved. The victim was pronounced dead at 11:10 WIT (Eastern Indonesian Time), or 25 minutes after the shooting incident.

Meanwhile, the spokesperson for the West Papua National Liberation Army-Free Papua Movement or TPNPB-OPM, Sebby Sambom, claimed that the victim died after a shootout with his group's militia in Yahukimo. He stated that the shooting of the military soldier had been planned by his group in Kodap Yahukimo.

"We have planned it, so we are ready to take responsibility for the shooting," said Sebby in his statement on Monday, June 16, 2025.
