TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The live-action version of How To Train Your Dragon has hit the cinemas on June 11, 2025. The film that takes audiences on an adventure to the world of dragons and Vikings recreates the iconic island of Berk and all the locations in the real-world destination, specifically in Northern Ireland, which also holds various other interesting destinations to visit.

How To Train Your Dragon is set during the era of Vikings and takes place on the fictional island of Berk. The story revolves around friendships amidst the conflict between the Viking tribe and the dragons. Hiccup, a young Viking, befriends a Night Fury dragon named Toothless.

This relationship challenges the foundation of Viking society and Hiccup's bond with his father, Stoick the Vast, who is also the Chief of the Viking tribe. These characters are portrayed by actors such as Mason Thames as Hiccup and Gerard Butler reprising his role as Stoick the Vast.

How To Train Your Dragon Filming Locations

Not only the cast, but the real-world filming sites of this live-action movie are equally interesting. As reported by Travel and Leisure Asia, the world of Berk is recreated in Northern Ireland, including some of the iconic scenes in the film.

Northern Ireland, part of the United Kingdom, is known for its stunning landscapes. Belfast, its capital, is the birthplace of the famous Titanic. From Belfast, tourists can visit various popular destinations, including Carrick-a-Rede, Dunluce Castle, The Dark Hedges, Tollymore Forest Park, and Giant's Causeway. Some of these locations are also featured in How To Train Your Dragon.

Tollymore Forest Park

Tollymore Forest Park serves as the iconic backdrop for the meeting of Hiccup and Toothless. Open to the public all year round, this forest park located in Newcastle covers an area of nearly 630 hectares at the foot of the Mourne Mountains.

Visitors can enjoy views of the surrounding mountains and the sea in Newcastle. According to Visit Mourne Mountains, the forest park features a decorated granary made to look like a church, a stone cone on a pillar gateway, and a Gothic-style archway. This was designed by Thomas Wright from Durham, a friend of Lord Clanbrassil, the owner of Tollymore at that time.

Giant's Causeway

Another interesting attraction is the Giant's Causeway, located on the edge of the North Atlantic Ocean. Known as a famous geological wonder with its dramatic cliffs, it has over 40,000 interlocking basalt columns that were formed by volcanic eruptions and have stood for centuries.

This area is rich in myths, legends, and history. One of the most famous is the tale of a giant who crossed the sea to Scotland from this site. The stunning landscape of this UNESCO World Heritage Site has also been featured in films.

Dunseverick Castle

The Causeway coastline features the natural landscape of Dunseverick Castle in County Antrim, which was once a stronghold and ancient royal site of the Gaelic kingdom of Dál Riata. Although the castle no longer stands, the ruins of this monument, located along the sloping cliff facing the sea, also served as the backdrop for Berk island.

Murlough Bay

This bay, located on the northern coast of County Antrim, between Fair Head and Torr Head, is known for its remoteness and natural beauty. As part of the Murlough National Nature Reserve, the landscape displays a 6,000-year-old sand dune system with stunning rock formations and extensive hills.

This place offers views across the sea to Rathlin Island, Mull of Kintyre, among other Scottish islands, as quoted from CCGHT. According to history, this bay was chosen as the burial place for the Irish patriot and poet, Sir Roger Casement, who was executed by the British in August 1916. A small memorial commemorating him is held every August in Murlough.
