Spanish Airline Ejects French Jewish Teenagers from Flight Over Disruptive Behavior

4 days ago 12

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - A Spanish airline, Vueling, removed 52 Jewish teenagers. The company's leader, Carolina Martinoli, stated that the teenagers were removed from the flight due to very disruptive behavior.

Martinolli said the airline had launched an internal investigation after a group of French citizens who are Jewish were removed from one of its flights earlier this week. Meanwhile, French Foreign Minister Jean-Noel Barrot requested clarification from the airline as to why they were discriminated against based on their religion.

Martinoli assured the minister that they are conducting a thorough internal investigation. The findings will be shared with the French and Spanish authorities. A similar approach is also being made to the Spanish ambassador to France.

About 52 Jewish passengers, including teenagers and a 21-year-old summer camp director, were removed from Vueling's flight from Valencia to Paris last Wednesday. Israeli media and social media users suspected that the group was removed after some children, aged 10 to 15, were heard singing songs in Hebrew.

In response, Vueling strongly denied accusations of antisemitism. In a statement on Thursday quoted from Anadolu, Vueling said the decision was solely based on concerns for safety due to their highly disruptive behavior.

According to the airline, the group interfered with emergency equipment. They also disrupted the safety demonstrations being announced and repeatedly disregarded instructions from the cabin crew.

The airline claimed that upon arrival at the terminal, some members of the group remained aggressive. One person was arrested for resisting the authorities.

On Thursday, the Spanish Federation of Jewish Communities expressed its concern over the incident. As reported by France 24, the group stated that Vueling needs to provide documentary evidence of what happened on the plane.
