Prabowo Orders Faster Housing for Sumatra Disaster Victims

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto has instructed ministers to expedite the completion of temporary and permanent housing for the Sumatra flood disaster victims.

Cabinet Secretary Teddy Indra Wijaya stated that the President made this request during a meeting with several Red and White Cabinet ministers at his private residence in Hambalang, Bogor on Sunday, December 14, 2025.

"The construction of temporary and permanent housing for all disaster-affected residents in Sumatra. The President wants these to be built as soon as possible," Teddy said in an official statement from the Presidential Secretariat.

Teddy Indra Wijaya mentioned that the meeting took place after Prabowo conducted a direct assessment at the Sumatra disaster site. The meeting discussed various aspects of disaster management.

In a photo shared by the Presidential Secretariat, among the attending ministers were the Minister of Energy and Mineral Resources Bahlil Lahadalia, Minister of Forestry Raja Juli Antoni, Minister of Defense Syafrie Syamsuddin, Minister of Housing and Settlement Areas Maruarar Sirait, Minister of Finance Purbaya Yudhi Sadewa, and Minister of Maritime Affairs and Fisheries Sakti Wahyu Trenggono.

There were also the Minister of Agriculture Andi Amran Sulaiman, the Minister of Research and Technology Brian Yuliarso, Minister of State Prasetyo Hadi, and Head of the State-Owned Enterprises (SOE) Holding Management Agency (BP BUMN) Dony Oskaria.

Furthermore, Prabowo also demanded the fulfillment of basic needs for the refugees. Prabowo requested that these needs be ensured to be fully met. "Maximal addition of heavy equipment and water trucks, provision of clean water, and portable toilets, especially in the most affected areas," he said.

Teddy stated that the meeting also discussed the government's preparedness for the year-end holidays, including food security stability, basic commodity prices, and national economic developments.

The government also discussed providing incentives in several sectors to support smooth mobility for the public during the year-end holiday period. "Incentives will be provided to several sectors for the smoothness of year-end holidays, especially significant reduction of toll road tariffs, airfares, train tickets, sea transportation, and other public facilities," said Teddy.

The National Disaster Management Agency (BNPB) reported that the number of deaths from the Sumatra disaster had reached 1,016 as of Sunday, December 14, 2025. The Head of BNPB's Data and Information Center for Disaster Abdul Muhari stated that this number had increased from the previous data of 1,006 deaths as of Saturday, December 13, 2025.

"The total death toll is 1,016. Previously 1,006," he said in the BNPB press conference on Sunday, December 14, 2025.

Meanwhile, the number of missing persons was 212 as of Sunday, December 14, 2025. This number had decreased from 217 as of Saturday, December 13, 2025. Over the past week, the number of missing persons had decreased by 58.

Abdul stated that the number of refugees at the disaster sites had also decreased. As of Sunday, December 14, 2025, there were a total of 624,670 refugees, a decrease from 654,542 as of Saturday, December 13, 2025.

BNPB Head Suharyanto previously mentioned that the Indonesian National Defense Forces and the National Police would build temporary shelters for the victims. The Type 36 shelters would be built at a cost of Rp30 million. The shelters could be built within 6 months. Meanwhile, permanent housing would be built with a budget of Rp60 million.

President Prabowo Subianto expressed his willingness to temporarily revoke land use permits for the construction of these houses. "If necessary, land use permits can be temporarily revoked, reduced. This is a matter of greater importance for the people. Land must be available," he said during a coordination meeting with several ministers and agencies in Aceh, on Sunday evening, December 7, 2025.
