TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Pertamina's President Director, Simon Aloysius Mantiri, has revealed plans to merge Pelita Air with Garuda Indonesia. Simon stated that this merger is part of Pertamina's focus on developing its business in the oil, gas, and renewable energy sectors.
Simon mentioned that Pertamina is currently exploring a merger or cooperation between the two airlines. "We will then focus on Pertamina's core business. Some efforts will be spun off and possibly under Danantara's coordination," said Simon during a Hearing with the House of Representatives' (DPR) Commission VI at the Parliamentary Complex, Senayan, Jakarta, on Thursday, September 11, 2025.
Pelita Air is a subsidiary of Pertamina involved in scheduled commercial flights with medium services, as well as non-scheduled flights for business and government needs. The discourse of merging Pelita Air with Garuda Indonesia has been widely discussed since earlier this year.
Previously, PT Garuda Indonesia (Persero) Tbk. acknowledged that they had been exploring corporate merger actions with Pelita Air. Garuda's management stated that discussions about the merger plan are still in the early stages. "Regarding the steps of exploring corporate actions, it is currently still in the early discussion stage with relevant parties," said Garuda's management in the openness information on the Indonesia Stock Exchange website.
Garuda Indonesia's management believes that the merger of the two airlines will optimize various business opportunities and strengthen the air transportation industry ecosystem. "To strengthen the air transportation industry business ecosystem in Indonesia so that it can bring sustainable benefits to the public," said the management.
Although it has a positive impact on the company, neither Garuda Indonesia nor Pertamina has provided the public with an explanation of the progress of the merger. Various discussions are still ongoing and are in the exploration stage.
