Pakistan Launches Retaliatory Strikes, Targets Indian Missile Base

2 hours ago 1

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Tensions between Pakistan and India have escalated sharply as Pakistan initiated a military counterattack against India on Saturday, May 10, 2025. According to Pakistani-owned media, this action is a response to what they called a "blatant act of aggression."

"Multiple locations in India are being targeted in the retaliatory attacks," the media reported as cited by ABC Australia.

Pakistan's military operation, named 'Operation Bunyan-un-Marsoos', reportedly destroyed a BrahMos missile storage facility in the Beas area of northern India. This development marks the most significant escalation in the conflict between the two neighboring countries in nearly three decades.

"The BrahMos storage site has been taken out …," Pakistan's military said in a message to journalists, adding that the Pathankot Air Base in India's Punjab state and the Udhampur Air Force Base in Indian-administered Kashmir were also targeted.

Pakistan's Information Minister announced in a social media post that the military operation's name is a term derived from the Quran meaning a strong and united structure.

On Saturday, explosions were reported in two major cities within the conflicted Kashmir region, Srinagar and Jammu, as well as in the garrison town of Udhampur.

"Explosions that we are hearing today are different from the ones we heard the last two nights during drone attacks," said Shesh Paul Vaid, the region’s former top police official and Jammu resident.

"It looks like a war here," he added.

Pakistan's strikes follow reports that India fired missiles at three Pakistani air bases the previous Saturday, including one near the capital Islamabad. However, Pakistan's air defenses reportedly intercepted the majority of these missiles.

"India, through its planes, launched air-to-surface missiles … Nur Khan base, Mureed base, and Shorkot base were made targets," Pakistani military spokesperson Lieutenant General Ahmad Sharif Chaudhry said in a televised statement.

One of the targeted air bases is located in Rawalpindi, a garrison town near Pakistan's capital, Islamabad. The other two are situated in the eastern Pakistani province of Punjab, which borders India.

Chaudhry said that India had fired six ballistic missiles from the Punjab border, confirming that most were intercepted by Pakistan's air defenses.

The Nur Khan Air Base in Rawalpindi, which houses military headquarters, is approximately 10 kilometers from Islamabad. Following the reported attack, Pakistan closed its airspace.

A Pakistani military spokesperson indicated that only a few missiles managed to bypass their air defenses and that initial damage assessments showed no impact on any "air assets."

India's defense and foreign ministries did not immediately respond to requests for comments outside of regular working hours. The Indian military has indicated that they are expected to brief the media soon, according to the defense ministry.

The two nations, locked in a long-standing dispute over the Kashmir region, have been engaged in daily skirmishes since Wednesday when India conducted strikes inside Pakistan targeting what it described as militant bases. Pakistan had previously vowed to retaliate for these actions.

This latest escalation follows an armed massacre last month, which India has blamed on Pakistan, further fueling the ongoing conflict.
