Oman Unveils US-Houthi Ceasefire Agreement

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The United States and Houthi rebels in Yemen have reached a ceasefire agreement, mediated by Oman, as reported by Arab News. Muscat stated that the agreement will ensure
"freedom of navigation" in the Red Sea, where the militia has been attacking ships, particularly to and from Israel.

“Following recent discussions and contacts... with the aim of de-escalation, efforts have resulted in a ceasefire agreement between the two sides,” Omani Foreign Minister Badr Albusaidi said in a statement posted online.

He added that “neither side will target the other... ensuring freedom of navigation and the smooth flow of international commercial shipping” in the Red Sea.

Earlier on Tuesday, President Donald Trump said that the U.S. would stop bombing the Houthi rebels in Yemen after the Iran-backed group agreed to stop disrupting crucial shipping lanes in the Middle East.

During a meeting in the Oval Office with Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney, Trump announced that the Houthi rebels had no longer wanted to fight. However, he did not further elaborate on the message.

“They said please don’t bomb us any more and we’re not going to attack your ships,” Trump said.

The Houthi group has been firing at Israel and ships in the Red Sea since Israel initiated a genocide in Gaza. Over 52,600 Palestinian civilians have died in Israeli attacks on Gaza, mostly women and children.

Israel has also blocked humanitarian aid to Gaza since March 2, causing residents there to only eat once every 2-3 days, according to the UN Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees (UNRWA) this week.

The U.S. President stated that Washington would trust the Houthis' statement that they would not blow up ships again.

Tensions have been rising since the start of the Gaza genocide, but have escalated further since Houthi missiles landed near Israel's Ben Gurion Airport on Sunday. This triggered Israeli airstrikes on Hodeidah port in Yemen on Monday.

Israeli military conducted an airstrike at Yemen's main airport in Sanaa on Tuesday, their second attack in two days on the Houthi rebels following increased tensions between the group and Israel.
