TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The meeting between the Commission for the Acceleration of Police Reform and the Indonesian National Police Retirees Association grew heated as participants debated a plan to create a National Security Ministry. Held in the Aspiration Room at the State Secretariat Ministry on Wednesday, December 10, 2025, the session was also attended by representatives of the National Police Science Scholars Association and the Indonesian Police Profession Scholars Association (ISPPI).

Ito Sumardi, ISPPI Chairperson and Chief Adviser to the National Police Chief, said the discussion was intense over the proposed Security Ministry. The new ministry would oversee policy and administrative affairs of the police. "The concept mirrors the relationship between the Defense Ministry and the Indonesian Military," the former Chief of the National Police Criminal Investigation Department told Tempo on Wednesday, January 21, 2026.

Ito said the idea originated with Jimly Asshiddiqie, Chair of the Police Reform Commission. Jimly was supported by two commission members, Mohammad Mahfud Md. and Coordinating Minister for Legal, Human Rights, Immigration, and Correctional Affairs Yusril Ihza Mahendra.

The commission comprises 10 figures. National Police Chief Gen. Listyo Sigit Prabowo serves as a member representing the force. Other members include former police chiefs Tito Karnavian, now Home Affairs Minister; Badrodin Haiti; and Idham Azis; as well as former Deputy Police Chief Ahmad Dofiri. The remaining members are Law Minister Supratman Andi Agtas and Deputy Coordinating Minister for Legal, Human Rights, Immigration, and Correctional Affairs Otto Hasibuan.
