TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Former Chief Justice of Nepal, Sushila Karki, is set to represent Gen Z demonstrators in negotiations with the Nepalese Army regarding the formation of a new government. The decision followed a marathon six-hour meeting held by the youth-led protesters.
According to NDTV, the Nepal's youths have presented a set of demands, including the arrest of Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli, the Minister of Home Affairs, and other officials allegedly responsible for mass killings.
They are also calling for a new constitution to limit future prime ministers to two terms, the immediate annulment of politically influenced appointments in constitutional bodies such as the CIAA and the judiciary, and a system of merit-based appointments.
The demonstrators have proposed Sushila Karki as their representative. Karki, the first female Chief Justice of Nepal, is widely recognized for her zero-tolerance stance on corruption.
She earned a Bachelor’s degree from Mahendra Morang Campus, a Master’s in Political Science from Banaras Hindu University, and a law degree from Tribhuvan University before beginning her career as a law educator.
Karki later became a senior advocate and was appointed Chief Justice on July 11, 2016. During her tenure, she presided over several high-profile anti-corruption cases, including the conviction of then Minister of Information and Communication, Jaiprakash Prasad Gupta.
She also issued bold verdicts against Lokman Singh Karki, former Chief of the Nepal Commission to Investigate Abuse of Authority.
In 2017, she faced impeachment efforts by the Maoist-led government, which were eventually withdrawn following strong public and judicial backlash.
Nepal remains politically unstable after Prime Minister Sharma KP Oli resigned on Tuesday amid widespread anti-corruption protests sparked by the government’s social media ban.
The demonstrations, which began on September 8 in Kathmandu and spread to major cities including Pokhara, Butwal, and Birgunj, left at least 22 people dead over the weekend.
