Mohamed Salah Honored as FWA Footballer of the Year

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Liverpool's star forward, Mohamed Salah, has been recognized as the FWA Footballer of the Year, an award given by the Football Writers' Association to the best player in the English Premier League for the current season. He garnered 90 percent of the votes from 918 eligible members.

Salah's closest contender was his Liverpool teammate, Virgil van Dijk, who finished in second place. Newcastle United's striker Alexander Isak and Arsenal's midfielder Declan Rice completed the top four in the voting.

"Rarely has there been a more popular winner than Mo. His overwhelming victory is just a reflection of an incredible season," said John Cross, the Chairman of the FWA, as quoted on Liverpool's official website on Friday.

"He continues to rewrite the record books and his performances this season have obviously been key to Liverpool’s 20th title," he added.

This marks the third time the Egyptian player has received this prestigious award, having previously won it in 2018 and 2022.

These achievements place Salah ahead of football icons such as Cristiano Ronaldo, as well as two Liverpool legends, Sir Kenny Dalglish and John Barnes, who each won the award twice. Salah now equals the record held by Thierry Henry, who also has three FWA Footballer of the Year titles.

Throughout this season, Salah has played a pivotal role in helping Liverpool clinch the Premier League title. So far, the Egyptian star has impressively scored 33 goals and provided 23 assists in just 49 appearances across all competitions.

These statistics have the potential to increase further, as the 32-year-old player still has three more league matches for Liverpool in which he can contribute goals.

His exceptional performance has propelled the player wearing the number 11 jersey back to the forefront in the race for the Premier League Golden Boot with 28 goals. Additionally, his 18 assists put him in a strong position to contend for other individual awards this season.
