TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - A group of masked robbers disguised as police officers carried out a dramatic, movie-like attack on an armored cash-car on a busy highway in southern Italy on Monday morning. As reported by The Hindustan Times, the daring robbery, caught on camera and widely shared on X-rated platforms, has shocked online viewers.
Footage from the incident on a motorway in the Puglia region shows the group wearing balaclavas and armed with Kalashnikovs during the Monday morning attack.
The robbery took place shortly after dawn on the 613 motorway connecting Lecce and Brindisi, when the gunmen arrived at the scene in an Alfa Romeo Stelvio, a Jeep Compass, and a Kia Sportage—all with fake emergency lights on, according to local media reports.
They then set fire to a vehicle, forcing the armored car to stop. The gang then used explosives on the armored car, sending a large plume of smoke into the air.
In a video shared on X, the gang is seen hiding behind a car moments before an armored vehicle belonging to the Battistolli security company explodes, sending flames and metal fragments flying into the air.
According to some reports, the number of armored vehicles blocked was actually two and they were carrying millions of euros – but this has not been confirmed.
Video captured by an eyewitness shows at least six masked individuals, some of whom appear to be wearing white coats.
As they then attempted to flee, the gunmen opened fire on the Carabinieri – Italy’s national law enforcement agency – who had intervened.
Robbery Foiled
Officials said that despite the dramatic attack, the cash inside the van was not stolen.
“The money transported in the armoured van was not stolen because after the explosion, the system’s Spumablock came into action,” said Colonel Cristian Marello, head of the Carabinieri’s Lecce division, as reported by Italian media.
According to reports, the van was forced to stop after another vehicle blocked the road. While some suspects tried to unload items from the damaged vehicle, others reportedly fired at arriving police.
Investigators believe that at least one unmarked vehicle used in the robbery had flashing lights that could be removed to help disguise the suspects as law enforcement officers.
Police later found an abandoned Alfa Romeo, believed to have been used in the robbery, in a field. Two suspects, aged 38 and 61, have been arrested on suspicion of attempted murder, aggravated robbery, possession of war weapons and explosives, and resisting a public officer.
"The search for the other accomplices continues. We believe eight people participated in the assault," Marello said.
