TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Thailand and Cambodia have agreed to let Malaysia mediate their border conflict. On Sunday, Malaysian Foreign Minister Mohamad Hasan said that both sides had claimed to have launched further artillery attacks in the disputed area.
According to Bernama news agency, Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Manet and Thai Deputy Prime Minister Phumtham Wechayachai are expected to arrive in Malaysia on Monday night. "They have full confidence in Malaysia and asked me to be a mediator," Mohamad said.
He added that he had spoken with his counterparts from Cambodia and Thailand. They agreed that no other country should be involved in this matter.
The talks in Malaysia follow Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim's proposal of a ceasefire on Friday, July 26, 2025, as chairperson of the ASEAN regional forum. On Saturday, U.S. President Donald Trump said that the two leaders had agreed to seek a ceasefire.
The war between Thailand and Cambodia has been ongoing for the last four days. The death toll has surpassed 30, including 13 Thai civilians and eight Cambodian civilians. Authorities said that more than 200,000 people have been evacuated from border areas of the two countries.
Following a call by U.S. President Donald Trump, Thailand and Cambodia have expressed openness to discussing a ceasefire. Trump has intervened in the armed conflict on the border between the two countries. The ongoing battles since Thursday have killed at least 32 people on both sides.
