TEMPO.CO, Jakarta – A magnitude 6.4 earthquake struck southern Java in Indonesia in the early hours of Friday, February 6, 2026, causing damage to buildings in several areas of the Special Region of Yogyakarta.
The Regional Disaster Management Agency (BPBD) recorded at least 40 affected residents, while a number of public facilities and homes sustained damage.
Head of the Yogyakarta BPBD Antonius Ruruh Haryata said the quake was felt across much of the region at around 01:06 AM local time.
“Preliminary data as of 10:30 AM show 40 affected individuals and several buildings with minor to moderate damage, particularly in Bantul Regency,” Ruruh said on Friday.
Bantul Regency was the worst-affected area, with damage reported in 10 sub-districts: Banguntapan, Bantul, Imogiri, Jetis, Kasihan, Pajangan, Pleret, Pundong, Sedayu, and Srandakan.
Authorities recorded damage to eight houses, two places of worship, one government building, two educational facilities, and one health facility.
In Yogyakarta City, damage was reported in Umbulharjo Sub-district, where the roof of a village hall was damaged. As of the latest reports, Sleman, Kulon Progo, and Gunungkidul regencies have not reported any damage or casualties.
Affected residents were taken to several hospitals in the region, including Yogyakarta PDHI Islamic Hospital, Muhammadiyah Bantul General Hospital, Panembahan Senopati Regional Hospital, Rajawali Citra Hospital, the Islamic University of Indonesia Hospital, and Prambanan General Hospital. Ruruh said most victims sustained minor injuries and have received medical treatment.
According to the Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency (BMKG), the earthquake’s epicenter was located offshore, about 89 kilometers southeast of Pacitan, East Java, at a depth of 58 kilometers. The quake was caused by subduction activity involving an uplift fault mechanism.
The tremors were felt at an intensity of IV on the Modified Mercalli Intensity (MMI) scale in Bantul and Sleman. Although the earthquake was felt as far as parts of Central Java and East Java, BMKG confirmed that it did not have the potential to trigger a tsunami.
Ruruh said the damage and casualty figures remain preliminary and could change as assessments continue.
BPBD, along with local governments, health workers, and volunteers, is still conducting field evaluations to ensure conditions in affected areas are under control.
