TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Central Jakarta Police said they support community activities during takbir night, the eve of Eid al-Fitr, but urged the public not to set off firecrackers during the celebrations.
“We welcome takbir night, but urge everyone not to use firecrackers,” Central Jakarta Police Chief Senior Commissioner Reynold E.P. Hutagalung told reporters at police headquarters on Friday, March 20, 2026.
The Indonesian government has set 1 Syawal 1447 Hijriah, marking Eid al-Fitr 2026, for Saturday, March 21.
Police said security would be concentrated at several locations expected to draw large crowds on Friday night. Reynold said 125 personnel would be deployed, with operations focused on the Hotel Indonesia (HI) Roundabout–Thamrin corridor.
The area around HI Roundabout is expected to remain busy as the Jakarta provincial government plans a series of events there to welcome Eid al-Fitr.
To support the celebrations, the city will impose a Car Free Night policy starting at 10:00 PM, restricting private vehicles along the MH Thamrin–Jenderal Sudirman corridor, Governor Pramono Anung said earlier this month.
Public transport, including TransJakarta buses, will continue to operate, allowing residents to access the Sudirman-Thamrin area during takbir night.
Despite the traffic restrictions, authorities said the continued operation of TransJakarta is expected to help residents travel to the city center safely and reduce congestion during the celebrations.
