TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - ISIS has claimed responsibility for a deadly attack on a Shia mosque in Pakistan’s capital, Islamabad, on Friday, February 7, 2026.
According to a statement released by ISIS on Saturday, the attack occurred after security personnel stopped one of its fighters attempting to enter the mosque.
The attacker reportedly detonated an explosive vest at the entrance, where worshippers had gathered for Friday prayers.
The explosion took place at Imambargah Mosque in Shehzad Town, a Shia place of worship. Local authorities confirmed at least 31 people were killed and 169 injured. Police are investigating the incident as a possible suicide bombing.
Pakistan has recently faced a series of militant attacks targeting military and police facilities, particularly near its border with Afghanistan.
In November 2025, a suicide bombing near a court in Islamabad killed 12 people despite heightened security measures in the capital.
Global Condemnation
The attack sparked widespread international condemnation. Turkey’s Foreign Ministry condemned the bombing in a written statement on its social media platform NSosyal, expressing condolences to the families of the victims and the people of Pakistan while praying for the recovery of the injured. Turkey reaffirmed its commitment to stand with Pakistan against terrorism.
Pakistan’s Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif spokesperson, Mosharraf Zaidi, accused India of orchestrating the attack as part of a broader campaign of terrorism.
“India's terrorist proxies will neither slow down economic recovery, nor divide Pakistani hearts, nor undermine Pakistan's growing diplomatic capital,” Zaidi wrote on X, as reported by Anadolu.
India, however, condemned the attack and expressed condolences, rejecting any involvement. New Delhi described the allegations as “baseless” and “unhelpful,” warning that Pakistan should avoid blaming others to mislead itself.
Russian President Vladimir Putin called the bombing “barbaric” in messages to Pakistan’s President Asif Ali Zardari and Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif. He pledged full support for the Pakistani people, describing attacks on religious ceremonies as “further proof of the brutal and inhumane nature of terrorism.”
UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres also condemned the bombing, calling attacks on civilians and places of worship “unacceptable.”
Guterres urged that those responsible be identified and brought to justice, offered condolences to the victims’ families, and wished a “full and speedy” recovery to the injured. He reaffirmed the UN’s commitment to solidarity with Pakistan in its fight against terrorism and extremism.
