TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Indonesia's Ministry of Religious Affairs holds an isbat session to determine the beginning of Ramadan 1447 H/2026 M at Hotel Borobudur, Jakarta, on Tuesday, February 17, 2026, in the afternoon.
Quoting the official statement from the ministry, the series of isbat session starts with a seminar on hilal (crescent moon) position at 4:30 PM WIB (Western Indonesia Time). Attending are astronomical experts and astronomers. The isbat session is held behind closed doors at 6:30 PM WIB, and the results are announced through a press conference around 7:05 PM WIB.
Today's session was attended by representatives of friendly embassies, House of Commission VIII, the Supreme Court of Indonesia, the Indonesian Ulema Council (MUI), as well as experts from the Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) and the National Research and Innovation Agency (BRIN). In addition, representatives from the Bandung Institute of Technology (ITB), planetarium representatives, members of the Religious Affairs Ministry's Hisab Rukyat Team, astronomy experts from various Islamic social organizations, and leaders of Islamic mass organizations and Islamic boarding schools were also present.
The Director of Islamic Affairs and Sharia Guidance, Arsad Hidayat, stated that the isbat session is conducted to ensure the accurate and scientifically and legally justifiable determination of the beginning of Ramadan.
"The isbat session is a collaborative forum to verify hisab (calculation) data and the results of rukyat (crescent moon sighting) before the government determines the start of Ramadan. The decision made must be scientific and in accordance with Sharia principles," said Arsad in Kemenag's official statement.
Arsad said that the Ministry of Religious Affairs is committed to maintaining transparency and accountability in determining the start of Ramadan. Through the isbat session, all data is verified together to ensure that the resulting decision serves as a guideline for the Indonesian Islamic community.
The public can witness the series of activities and the announcement of the isbat session result through the Bimas Islam digital channel on YouTube, Instagram @bimasislam, and TikTok @bimas_islam. The results of the isbat session will be announced through a press conference broadcasted on the Kemenag_RI YouTube channel.
