TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The second Airbus A400M MRTT aircraft ordered by Indonesia underwent its maiden test flight at the Airbus facility in San Pablo, Seville, Spain, on Wednesday, December 12, 2025. This flight is part of the production process for the heavy transport aircraft to support the operations of the Indonesian Air Force (TNI AU).
''This flight marks a significant milestone in the production process for the second aircraft ordered by the Indonesian government to support TNI AU operations,'' said the Head of the Indonesian Air Force Information Service, Air Marshal First Class I Nyoman Suadnyana, in a written statement on Sunday, December 14, 2025.
The aircraft with manufacturing number MSN 150 took off at 11:45 local time and safely landed back at 16:45. Airbus deployed a qualified functional test crew to evaluate various technical parameters and aircraft performance during the flight.
The test crew consisted of Captain Pilot Jonathan Taylor, Flight Officer Julian Castao, Flight Test Engineer Javier Moreno, Load Master Juan Carlos Rojo, and Test Flight Engineer Jose Carlos Caete. Several Indonesian representatives also attended the event.
The Defense Attach of the Republic of Indonesia in Madrid, Colonel Pilot (Pnb) Agus Dwi Aryanto, participated in the test flight along with the technical representative team, pilots, and loadmasters of the Indonesian Air Force who are undergoing training programs in Spain. Their presence was to monitor the aircraft's readiness before its handover to Indonesia.
According to Suadnyana, the presence of the A400M MRTT is expected to enhance the air mobility capabilities of the Indonesian Air Force, for both strategic transport, humanitarian missions, and military operations. The procurement of this aircraft is said to align with the Indonesian Air Force's transformation agenda towards an adaptable, modern, professional, superior, and humanitarian air force.
Previously, Indonesia had received the first transport aircraft on November 3, 2025. President Prabowo Subianto handed it over to the Indonesian Air Force at Halim Perdanakusuma Air Force Base, Jakarta. The A-4001 aircraft arrived in Indonesia after a three-day journey from Seville. Currently, the aircraft is involved in a humanitarian mission in Sumatra.
The Airbus A400M is a versatile military transport aircraft capable of carrying loads of up to tens of tons, including armored vehicles and light helicopters. The aircraft can also operate on short and unpaved runways, deemed a strategic asset to support Indonesian Air Force aerial operations in the vast and diverse Indonesian region.
