TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Ministry of Foreign Affairs, through the Director of Indonesian Citizen Protection, Jhuda Nugraha, provided clarification regarding the death of an Indonesian Migrant Worker in Cambodia.

The incident, which had drawn public attention, is currently being handled by the Indonesian Embassy in Phnom Penh.

"Regarding the case of the Indonesian Migrant Worker who passed away, named Soleh Damawan from Bekasi, it has been handled by the Indonesian Embassy in Phnom Penh and the body has been repatriated to Indonesia," said Judha.

In response to circulating concerns about potential organ trafficking, Judha rejected the allegations.

"Regarding Soleh, there indeed was his employer. There was a commotion at the time because there were traces of stitches and then the issue of organ trafficking emerged, but it has been confirmed that the stitches were from an old wound due to the illness of the person in question," he explained.

Judha also reassured that the Indonesian Embassy in Phnom Penh continues to coordinate with local authorities to investigate the case following the proper procedures.

He further pointed out the significant discrepancy between the number of migrant workers who report themselves and the actual number of Indonesian workers in Cambodia.

According to data from the Indonesian Embassy in Phnom Penh, only about 15,000 migrant workers have reported themselves. However, Cambodian immigration data shows that around 89,000 Indonesian workers hold work permits.

"The majority indeed do not report themselves. We only find out about the existence of Indonesian migrant workers when they encounter problems, or even in cases like this, when they pass away. This certainly poses a major challenge for us," he stated.

Judha underscored the critical role of self-reporting as the first step in safeguarding Indonesian migrant workers abroad.
