TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Every year, the list of the happiest countries in the world grabs attention, as it reflects how people around the world are living and feeling. This ranking goes beyond just economic factors, taking into account social support, life expectancy, freedom of choice, generosity, and corruption levels.
The United Nations (UN) World Happiness Report highlights countries that have successfully created positive, fulfilling living environments for their citizens. Here’s a look at the happiest countries in the world in 2025.
1. Finland
For the eighth year in a row, Finland is ranked the happiest country in the world. It performs strongly across various key indicators, including GDP per capita, social support, life expectancy, freedom, generosity, and low corruption levels. Finnish society benefits from easy access to nature, a fair education and healthcare system, and a supportive social environment, making well-being an everyday part of life.
2. Denmark
In second place, Denmark continues to stand out as one of the best places to live. With a strong social welfare system and universal access to healthcare and education, Danes enjoy a high sense of security. A culture of trust—both among individuals and in public institutions—combined with a healthy work-life balance, makes happiness feel like a reality, not just a goal.
3. Iceland
Iceland takes third place, offering a mix of breathtaking natural beauty and an inclusive society. Known for its low crime rates, high levels of social participation, and personal freedom, Iceland fosters strong social solidarity and gender equality, creating a sense of trust and mutual support.
4. Sweden
Sweden is known for its progressive welfare policies, which promote work-life balance, mental health, and environmental sustainability.
5. Netherlands
The Netherlands continues to show stability in the happiness rankings, thanks to its open society, eco-friendly transportation options, and strong social support networks. After dropping to sixth place in 2024, the Netherlands reclaimed the fifth spot in 2025, reflecting higher life satisfaction among its citizens.
6. Costa Rica
Countries outside Europe, like Costa Rica, have also been consistent on the list, thanks to the nation’s focus on happiness as a key development goal. With its well-preserved natural environments, high education levels, and public policies that emphasize emotional well-being, Costa Rica shows that happiness isn’t just about economic growth, but also about shared values and strong social and environmental commitments.
7. Norway
Norway continues to rank highly in annual quality-of-life surveys. The country’s labor laws strongly favor employees: layoffs are difficult to carry out, and all workers are entitled to five weeks of paid leave. Salaries for low-skill jobs are relatively high, allowing even fast-food workers to afford smartphones and take extended vacations in the Mediterranean.
