TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Minister of Energy and Mineral Resources (ESDM) Bahlil Lahadalia  is working with the National Energy Council (DEN) to develop a roadmap on nuclear energy in Indonesia.

Bahlil stated that DEN has developed the National Energy General Plan and formulated various energy sector policies. "This includes the development of new renewable energy and also the push for nuclear energy use," said Bahlil at the Presidential Palace in Jakarta, on Wednesday, January 28, 2026.

Bahlil mentioned that the government is currently exploring cooperation in nuclear power plant development. "The roadmap is already completed, and we are now moving to seek cooperation with other countries. Now we need a Presidential Regulation, and it's underway," he said.

According to Bahlil, diversification is part of the government's strategy to achieve energy self-sufficiency. In addition to nuclear energy, the government is also promoting the development of renewable energy sources.

Bahlil stated that President Prabowo Subianto is focusing on four key priorities in the country's energy sector. "The first is energy sovereignty, there should be no intervention from any party," said the Chairman of the Golkar Party.

The second, he said, is regarding energy resilience. He mentioned that Indonesia's energy resilience is currently only sufficient for a 21-day supply. The government aims to increase this energy supply to last for three months, through, among others, building storage facilities.

The third focus, according to Bahlil, is energy self-reliance. "We know that today, we still import around 30 million kiloliters of fuel, both diesel and gasoline," he explained.

The fourth and last focus, he said, is to achieve energy self-sufficiency. "We are doing this in phases with the end goal of self-sufficiency," said the former investment minister.

Bahlil stated that the national energy policy will be implemented according to President Prabowo's instructions as the chair of the National Energy Council.

On Wednesday, January 28, 2026, Prabowo inaugurated DEN members, which consist of stakeholder groups and government members.

In today's inauguration, Prabowo officially appointed Minister Bahlil Lahadalia as the executive chair of DEN, along with seven other ministers as council members.

Meanwhile, eight members of the National Energy Council are academicians and industry actors who passed the fit and proper test back in November 2025.
