TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - PT Indonesia Battery Corporation (IBC) aims to complete feasibility study documents for its integrated battery industry project with a Chinese consortium within 2026.

The study marks the initial stage of the Titan project, an ambitious downstream initiative to strengthen Indonesia’s role in global battery production.

IBC President Director Aditya Farhan Arif said the Titan project continues the company’s mandate to develop the country’s nickel downstream industry.

After previously exploring a partnership with LG, IBC is now collaborating with PT Aneka Tambang, PT Indonesia Battery Corporation, and HYD, which is a joint venture between Huayou, EVE Energy Co., Ltd., and PT Daaz Bara Lestari Tbk.

“Since the beginning, IBC’s mission has been to advance the Dragon and Titan projects. This follows our previous work with LG and now continues with Huayou,” Aditya said after signing the collaboration agreement at the Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources on Friday, January 30, 2026.

The partnership aims not only to build production facilities but also to strengthen domestic technological capabilities. Aditya stressed that Indonesia should move beyond being a raw material supplier and develop the capacity to produce batteries independently.

“We are highly committed to technology development. In the future, we hope this technology will be owned by Indonesia,” he said, adding that the collaboration will serve as a learning platform for the national battery industry.

The next step is a joint feasibility study, which will assess technical, economic, and industrial readiness.

“After this study, a definitive agreement will follow, marking the subsequent stages of our collaboration with Huayou,” Aditya explained. The study is expected to be completed within the year and will guide investment and project development decisions.

Previously, PT Aneka Tambang Tbk, PT Industri Baterai Indonesia, and HYD had signed a collaboration framework for the battery industry. HYD combines Huayou, EVE Energy Co., Ltd., and PT Daaz Bara Lestari Tbk.

The signing ceremony was witnessed by Minister of Energy and Mineral Resources Bahlil Lahadalia, Minister of Industry Agus Gumiwang Kartasamita, and several state-owned enterprise directors.

“This agreement is the result of a lengthy negotiation process dating back to my time as head of the Investment Coordinating Board. The focus has always been to build an integrated electric vehicle battery ecosystem,” Bahlil said.

The Titan project is designed to achieve a production capacity of up to 20 gigawatt hours, with an estimated investment of US$6 billion and the potential to create 10,000 jobs.

While the project details remain subject to the feasibility study, batteries will support both electric vehicles and renewable energy initiatives, including a planned 100-gigawatt solar power program.

“This is not only for EV batteries but also for solar thermal storage,” Bahlil said, emphasizing the importance of domestic companies in accelerating technology transfer.

The government also supports local participation, including companies in West Java and the development of mines, smelters, and downstream facilities in East Halmahera, North Maluku.

“If implemented successfully, Indonesia could become one of the few countries after China to have a fully integrated EV battery ecosystem,” Bahlil added.
