TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Indonesian national futsal team finished as runner-up in the 2026 AFC Futsal Championship after a dramatic 4-5 penalty shootout loss to Iran in the final at Indonesia Arena on Saturday night, February 7, 2026.
The match had ended 5-5 after regulation and extra time, keeping fans on edge until the very last second.
The game started at a frantic pace, with Iran taking the early lead through Tayebi, momentarily silencing the home crowd. Indonesia responded swiftly as Reza Gunawan equalized, reigniting the arena. Momentum swung in favor of the hosts, with Israr scoring twice to put Indonesia ahead 3-1.
The Persian team fought back, narrowing the gap, though one goal was disallowed for being offside. Iran’s pressure intensified in the second half, and they eventually leveled the score at 3-3.
Indonesia regained the lead through Samuel Eko’s strike, but Iran equalized again at 4-4 just three minutes before full time, sending the match into extra time.
Extra time saw cautious play, with Iran controlling possession while Indonesia’s defense held firm. Drama returned in the second half of extra time when Israr scored his third goal of the match, giving Indonesia a 5-4 lead with just two minutes remaining.
However, Iran quickly equalized, making it 5-5 and setting the stage for a tense penalty shootout.
In the shootout, Indonesia converted four of six attempts, while Iran scored five, sealing their championship victory.
Despite falling short, Indonesia’s performance marked a historic milestone: this was the first time the Garuda reached the AFC Futsal Championship final.
The team’s resilience and high-level play signaled a resurgence of Indonesian futsal on the Asian stage, putting up a spirited fight against the continent’s most dominant team.
