TEMPO.CO, Jakarta – Indonesian president Prabowo Subianto and Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese signed a joint security treaty on Friday, February 6, 2026, expanding defense and security cooperation between Indonesia and Australia.

The agreement builds on the bilateral security pact first signed in 1995 by the governments of then Indonesian President Soeharto and Australian Prime Minister Paul Keating.

The signing took place at the Merdeka Palace in Jakarta. Speaking after the ceremony, Prabowo said the treaty reaffirmed the close ties between the two countries and their shared commitment to strengthening bilateral cooperation.

“Today, Prime Minister Albanese and I reaffirmed Indonesia's close relation with Australia to continue to strengthen Indonesia and Australia's partnership through the signing of the Treaty of Common Security,” Prabowo said.

He said the agreement reflects both countries’ determination to continue working together to safeguard national and regional security, as well as their shared goal of contributing to peace and stability in the Indo-Pacific region.

Prime Minister Albanese said discussions on the treaty had been ongoing since Prabowo’s visit to Australia in November 2025.

Albanese expressed hope that the treaty would further strengthen bilateral relations. He said the agreement demonstrated Prabowo’s leadership and personal commitment to promoting regional and global security.

"This signals that Australia’s and Indonesia’s relationship is stronger than it’s ever been," Albanese said.

"The fact we are signing this treaty today is testament to president Prabowo’s strong leadership and his personal commitment to promoting security in our region, and indeed around the world."

Under the agreement, Indonesia and Australia will expand defense cooperation in several areas, including military officer exchanges, joint exercises, and cooperation in military education and training.

Albanese is on a three-day official visit to Indonesia from February 5 to 7, 2026. The trip marks his second visit to Indonesia since Prabowo assumed the presidency.

Indonesia was also Albanese’s first overseas destination after he was re-elected as Australian prime minister in May 2025, just one day after his victory. Since taking office in 2022, Albanese has visited Indonesia five times.

Prabowo later reciprocated the visit with a one-day state trip to Australia on November 11, 2025. During that visit, the two leaders held a bilateral meeting and discussed several areas of cooperation, including the joint security treaty signed on Friday.
