TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Ministry of Industry revealed that the alcohol beverage industry plays a role in Indonesia's economy, particularly in state revenue through excise contributions and export foreign exchange. The acting Director General of Agro Industry at the Ministry of Industry, Putu Juli Ardika, stated during the 6th Bali Arak Day celebration in Badung Regency on Thursday, January 29, 2026.
Putu Juli mentioned that domestic alcoholic beverages contributed a total of Rp8.92 trillion in excise taxes in 2025. Additionally, Rp361 billion was allocated for the production of imported alcoholic beverages, bringing the total revenue to Rp9.28 trillion.
"The excise amount for domestic production in 2025 even increased by 0.73 percent compared to 2024," said the Director General of Agro Industry.
Looking at the export aspect, alcoholic beverage commodities also contribute, with a recorded export value of US$15.75 million from January to November 2025.
"The largest export during that period was for type C alcohol beverages. One of them is Balinese arak (liquor) destined for Thailand, China, the Netherlands, and the United Arab Emirates," said Putu Juli.
The Ministry of Industry emphasized that these figures indicate a growing demand for alcohol beverage products from Indonesia. This also indicates that the business climate in Indonesia supports making the alcohol beverage production base export-oriented.
Putu Juli sees the development of the alcohol beverage industry as inseparable from the local wisdom of each region in Indonesia. In addition to Bali's famous arak, other Indonesian regions have their own traditional spirits. North Sumatra has tuak, Nias has tuo nifaro, East Java has legen, East Nusa Tenggara has sopi, and Papua has swansrai.
The Ministry of Industry recognizes that each region's characteristics reflect local wisdom inseparably linked to traditional ceremonies, religious rituals, and symbols of togetherness. "The diversity of traditional Indonesian alcohol beverages reflects invaluable cultural richness and local heritage, and becomes an advantage that other countries do not have," said Putu Juli.
Furthermore, Indonesia's alcohol beverage industry is supported by its beautiful natural resources, which attract tourists. For example, 45 percent of all foreign tourists who visit Indonesia go to Bali.
The government sees this as an opportunity for Balinese arak producers to promote their products further. "This is for the needs of the tourism sector and as one of the efforts to support the vision and mission of exporting alcoholic beverages abroad, as well as being one of the sources of economic growth for the Province of Bali," said Putu Juli.
The Ministry of Industry notes that the alcohol beverage industry is part of the food and beverage industry, with its production being controlled and supervised in accordance with Presidential Regulation Number 74 of 2013, and is a closed business sector in accordance with Presidential Regulation Number 49 of 2019.
Through Minister of Industry Regulation Number 17 of 2019, the Ministry of Industry controls and supervises the production and quality of alcoholic beverages. This ensures that products produced and circulated in society are of standardized quality and safe to consume.
