TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - A number of Facebook accounts [archive] uploaded claims regarding four Indonesian coins valued at hundreds of millions of rupiah. The accounts asked citizens who own these coins to report them through the comment section.

The four coins include a Rp1,000 denomination featuring an angklung valued at Rp300 million, and a Rp500 denomination featuring a jasmine flower priced at Rp 200 million. In addition, there is a Rp100 coin depicting karapan sapi worth Rp150 million and a Rp100 coin depicting a cockatoo valued at Rp100 million.

But is it true that these coins can be sold for hundreds of millions of rupiah?

FACT CHECK

Tempo verified the claims through interviews with experts and references from credible news sources. The results show that the coins are not worth hundreds of millions of rupiah, as all of them are still legal tender.

Esther Sri Astuti, Executive Director of the Institute for Development of Economics and Finance (INDEF), said that the four types of coins do not have such high values. She suggested that the claims are likely part of a scam aimed at collecting personal data.

Money that has high value, she said, is limited only to antique coins. “Those who buy antique coins are also limited to collectors,” Esther told Tempo on Thursday, February 12, 2026.

According to her, two of the coins mentioned in the content are still valid. Valid coins do not carry values far above their face value. Meanwhile, for coins that are no longer valid, people can exchange them at Bank Indonesia.

Next, Tempo verified the four types of coins through information available on the internet:

1. Rp1,000 Coin Featuring Angklung

The coin, which was officially issued in 2010, is still used as legal tender in Indonesia.

2. Rp500 Coin Featuring Jasmine Flower

The Rp500 coin, circulated since 1997, was officially withdrawn from circulation on December 1, 2023.

The public can exchange this coin within a 10-year period, or until 2033. Exchanges can be made through commercial bank offices or Bank Indonesia offices across the country. After the expiration period, the coin can no longer be exchanged.

3. Rp100 Coin Featuring Karapan Sapi (Bull Racing)

According to Antara.com, the Rp100 coin, circulated since 1991, was withdrawn from circulation in 2006.

The withdrawal also applied to the Rp50 coin issued in 1991 and the Rp5 coin issued in 1979. The exchange deadline for all three coins was November 29, 2016.

4. Rp 100 Coin Featuring King Cockatoo

The Rp100 coin, circulated since 1999, is still valid as legal tender in Indonesia.

CONCLUSION

Tempo’s verification concludes that the claim that rupiah coins are worth hundreds of millions is false.
