TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The residence of New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani was targeted with a homemade bomb. According to the New York City Police Department (NYPD), an improvised explosive device was thrown during the ongoing protest. Two individuals have been arrested.
Anti-Muslim demonstrators rallied outside Zohran Mamdani's residence, led by activist Jake Lang, who clashed with opposing demonstrators.
NYPD Commissioner Jessica Tisch stated that initial analysis concluded the object thrown during the protest was not a hoax device or smoke bomb. "It is, in fact, an improvised explosive device that could have caused serious injury or death," she said, as quoted by Al Jazeera. She added that a further analysis of the device and a second device left near the scene would be conducted.
Tisch mentioned that two men, identified as Emir Balat and Ibrahim Kayumi, were apprehended at the scene. The FBI has also joined the investigation.
Previously, police stated that Balat was among the group of opposing protesters when he threw a smoke-producing device toward barricades near the police. The device did not explode.
According to the police, the device contained nuts, bolts, and screws, as well as what they referred to as a "hobby fuse." Balat dropped a second device on the road as he fled, the police said.
In a statement on Sunday, Mamdani denounced Lang's protest. However, he stated that the subsequent violence was even more concerning. "Violence at a protest is never acceptable," he said.
"The attempt to use an explosive device and hurt others is not only criminal, it is reprehensible and the antithesis of who we are."
Lang, a right-wing activist who was arrested for storming the U.S. Capitol on January 6, 2021, was pardoned by President Donald Trump last year, calling for protests on Saturday as a form of opposition to what he termed the "Islamization" of New York City.
Mamdani is the city's first Muslim mayor, residing in a city estimated to be home to up to 1 million Muslims. In his statement, the mayor described Lang as a white supremacist.
