TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The wife of Nepal’s former Prime Minister Jhalanath Khanal, Rabi Laxmi Chitrakar, is receiving treatment for burn injuries and her condition is showing signs of improvement, according to Khanal’s personal secretary Krishna Bhattarai.

“Madam’s health condition has improved,” Bhattarai told Kantipur Daily Nepal, as cited by India Today. Chitrakar is currently undergoing treatment at Kirtipur Burn Hospital.

Earlier, Nepalese media reports cited by NDTV mistakenly claimed that Chitrakar had died after demonstrators set fire to her home.

Chitrakar was severely injured when her residence was torched amid escalating protests in Nepal. The unrest, largely led by Generation Z demonstrators, entered its second day on August 28, despite the government’s decision to lift the ban on social media platforms.

Protesters demanded the resignation of Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli and other top officials after several demonstrators were killed.

So far, the death toll from clashes with police has climbed to 22, with more than 300 people injured.

The protests have seen mobs attack key government and political buildings across the country. In Kathmandu, Singh Durbar, the central administrative complex, and Sheetal Niwas, the presidential residence, were set ablaze.

The private homes of President Ram Chandra Paudel, Prime Minister Oli, and former prime ministers Pushpa Kamal Dahal “Prachanda” and Sher Bahadur Deuba were also burned.

At Deuba’s residence, both he and his wife, Foreign Minister Arzu Rana Deuba, were reportedly assaulted. Political party offices were likewise targeted in the violence.

Amid the escalating crisis, Prime Minister Oli announced his resignation, saying he hoped the move would help resolve Nepal’s political turmoil.

According to military sources, Oli had earlier contacted the Chief of the Nepalese Army, General Ashok Raj Sigdel, requesting military assistance to manage the situation and secure his safe exit from the Prime Minister’s residence.

The army chief reportedly advised him to resign, stressing that the military could only restore order if Oli stepped down.
