TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Minister of Primary and Secondary Education, Abdul Mu’ti, said People’s School will use a multi-entry and multi-exit curriculum. “I explained it to the president yesterday, he said on Wednesday, March 26, 2025.
Mu'ti disclosed that in this curriculum, students are not required to enter in the same academic year. The ministry will phase the student recruitment. "So the students can enroll in waves,” he said.
Enrolled students, however, will be required to undergo the learning process in a dormitory with a differing curriculum from regular schools.
Previously, the Ministry of Social Affairs claimed that the existence of People's School will not replace existing schools. The head of the People's School formation team, Mohammad Nuh, explained that this government program will actually broaden access to education for children who are not yet in school.
"People's School is present to complement, not eliminate existing schools. Our focus is to ensure that every child has the right to learn," said Nuh as quoted from the Ministry of Social Affairs official statement on Tuesday, March 25.
The Ministry of Social Affairs ensures that regional mapping is carried out carefully so that People's School, locally known as Sekolah Rakyat, does not take the quota of other schools but is present in locations that require educational intervention. Mapping is carried out based on the level of poverty and the number of school-age children who have not received education.
One of the main principles in establishing People's School, according to the Ministry of Social Affairs, is to reach out to children who have not had access to school, either due to economic, geographic, or other social obstacles.
This selection is based on the deciles listed in the National Socio-Economic Single Data (DTSEN). To ensure that students can adapt well in the learning environment, a one-month matriculation program will be implemented before the new academic year begins.
"This matriculation is important to equip students with mental, social, and academic readiness, so they can participate in formal learning better," said Nuh.
