TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Cuban government announced that international flights will no longer be able to refuel there due to a shortage of aviation fuel. This comes after US President Donald Trump threatened to impose tariffs on any country that sells oil to the island.
Cuban leaders said on Sunday that the country would run out of jet fuel starting Monday, which could disrupt airlines operating there, according to two sources quoted by Spanish news agency EFE, as quoted by Anadolu.
All Cuban international airports are expected to be affected by the jet fuel shortage, which could last about a month.
Since the Trump administration's January 3 military operation to kidnap Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro, a longtime supporter of the Cuban government, the US government has sought to strengthen its position on Cuba.
In a late January executive order, Trump described the Cuban regime as an “unusual and extraordinary threat” and said that a declaration of a national emergency was necessary.
Trump claimed that human rights violations, communist rule, and Cuba's ties to countries such as China, Russia, and Iran contribute to regional instability “through migration and violence.”
Trump said during the announcement that the US could impose tariffs on countries that directly or indirectly supply oil to Cuba.
According to the source, Cuba meets about a third of its energy needs with domestic production. For the rest, Cuba relies on imports, mainly from Mexico and, to a lesser extent, Russia, with Venezuela accounting for about 30 percent of total supplies by 2025.
This week, the Cuban government launched a strict emergency plan that includes closing several hotels, reducing working hours in public offices and hospitals, and banning the sale of diesel in an effort to survive without imports of crude oil and its derivatives.
Air Canada Suspends Flights
Air Canada on Monday suspended all flights to Cuba, citing a severe shortage of aviation fuel on the island.
"Air Canada said that effective today it is suspending its service to Cuba due to an ongoing shortage of aviation fuel on the island," the airline said in an official statement, as reported by Anadolu.
“Over the following days, the airline will operate empty flights southbound to pick up approximately 3,000 customers already at destination and return them home,” the airline added.
The airline said the decision was made after a government warning about unreliable jet fuel supplies at Cuban airports, with projections that the fuel would no longer be commercially available starting Tuesday, February 10, 2026.
"Air Canada will continue to monitor the situation to determine an appropriate restart of normal service to Cuba at a future date," the airline added.
