TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The number of viewers of the movie 'Conclave' (2024) has almost quadrupled after the death of Pope Francis on Monday, April 21, 2025. The Oscar-winning feature tells a fictionalized story about the papal conclave, the process of electing a new pope.
According to Luminate data, 'Conclave' is seeing about a 283 percent viewer surge across U.S. streaming platforms, generating about 6.9 million minutes watched on April 21. This number is a staggering jump from the 1.8 million minutes just the day before.
'Conclave' is currently streaming on Amazon Prime Video at no additional cost to subscribers.
“The movie had a daily viewership of 1.7 million minutes watched in the U.S. during the tracking week April 11-17. So on Monday, it saw over 5 million more minutes watched than the average day last week,” Luminate was quoted as saying by Deadline.
The Intriguing Mystery of 'Conclave'
Directed by Edward Berger, 'Conclave' follows Cardinal Lawrence (Ralph Fiennes), who is tasked with overseeing the conclave after the death of the previous pope.
The College of Cardinals from around the world is summoned to the Vatican and gathers in the Sistine Chapel, kickstarting the election process when a new and mysterious cardinal shows up unannounced.

Citing the New York Post, Conclave has been praised for its focus on detail and accuracy surrounding the papal election, despite not being based on a true story. This is because once the Sistine Chapel is locked with 252 cardinals inside, no one else knows everything that goes on during the election process.
“They won’t tell you what happens behind closed doors in the conclave,” said 'Conclave' director Edward Berger. “And there are certain things you have to take license with.”
The movie 'Conclave' was funded by FilmNation and distributed in the United States by Focus. The movie reportedly cost $20 million to produce and has made more than $115 million globally.
The Two Popes' Viewership Surges
Viewership of 'The Two Popes' also soared 417 percent in the U.S. over the same two days, with 290,000 minutes watched on April 20 and 1.5 million minutes watched on April 21, 2025.
'The Two Popes' airs on Netflix, following the story of Pope Benedict XVI handing over the papacy to Pope Francis. The movie, released in 2019, stars Jonathan Pryce as Pope Francis and Anthony Hopkins as Pope Benedict. The Two Popes earned Oscar nominations for Pryce as Best Actor, Hopkins for Supporting Actor, and Adapted Screenplay for Anthony McCarten.
Pope Francis' body is currently resting in a casket in the chapel of the Santa Marta residence, where he lived for his 12 years of papacy. His funeral will take place on Saturday morning, April 26, at St. Peter's Basilica.
