Trump Promises "Fair" Trade Deal with China Amid Ongoing Tensions

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - U.S. President Donald Trump remarked that a potential agreement with China to rebalance trade relations would be “fair,” as tensions persist in the trade dispute between the world’s two largest economies.

"We are going to have a fair deal with China. It's going to be fair," said Trump at the White House on Wednesday, as reported by Anadolu, while claiming that the relationship with China had been "out of control" under his predecessor.

The comment echoed Trump’s optimistic tone from a day earlier, when he said negotiators would be “very good” to Beijing.

"I’m not gonna say ‘Oh, I’m gonna play hardball with China, I’m gonna play hardball with you President Xi (Jinping). No, no. We’re going to be very nice, they’re gonna be very nice, and we’ll see what happens," he said, as reported by Al Arabiya, adding that “ultimately they have to make a deal because otherwise they’re not going to be able to deal in the U.S.”

"So, we want them to be involved, but they have to do it, and other countries have to make deals, and if they don't make the deal, we'll set the deal," he further stated.

When asked by a reporter if Washington was in "active" negotiations with Beijing, Trump replied, "Active. Everything's active. Everybody wants to be part of what we're doing."

"They know that they can't get away with it any longer, but they're still going to do fine, and we're going to have a country that you can be proud of, not a laughing stock all over the world for many years," he said.

Earlier this month, Trump raised "reciprocal" tariffs against China from 84 percent to 125 percent as Washington and Beijing continued to escalate their tit-for-tat trade war.

The reciprocal tariffs were implemented in addition to the existing 20 percent levies previously imposed in connection with the circulation of illegal fentanyl, bringing the total effective tariffs on most Chinese goods to 145 percent.

Meanwhile, certain imported items are facing even steeper rates due to extra duties under Section 301 tariffs, which are intended to counteract unfair trade practices.

These additional tariffs range between 7.5 percent and 100 percent, meaning some Chinese products such as electric vehicles and syringes are now subject to U.S. tariffs as high as 245 percent.

Trump stated on Tuesday that the 145 percent tariffs on most goods from China would be reduced "substantially," but "won't be zero."
