TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Two Chinese tourists in Japan claimed to have been kicked out of a restaurant for wearing clothes deemed too revealing. The pair entered the renowned restaurant wearing sports vests and loose pants.
The incident took place at the popular Thai restaurant, Baan Thai Market, in Kobe, Japan. The ousted tourists were a Chinese blogger and their companion. The blogger recently shared their experience on Chinese social media. According to the South China Morning Post, the post garnered over 2,100 likes by October 28.
Chronology of the Incident
The incident occurred at the end of August 2025. According to the account in the post, the two Chinese tourists were greeted at the restaurant with the owner commenting, 'Summer is over. There's no need for you to be half-naked.'
The blogger revealed their reason for wearing such attire. They claimed that sports vests and loose pants are considered casual wear and are normal and appropriate.
They eventually stayed and had their meal at the restaurant, but the situation escalated. While they were still eating, the staff suddenly approached them, took their chopsticks, cleared their plates, and removed all their food without asking if they were finished, according to their post as reported by India NDTV.
The blogger claimed to have found numerous similar complaints about the same manager in Google reviews. Many reviewers reported rude and discriminatory treatment, with some accusing the restaurant owner of racist behavior.
Divided Netizens
According to Vn Express, many Japanese netizens criticized the restaurant and supported the Chinese tourists. 'The manager was really rude. His reputation has been bad for a long time,' wrote one netizen.
'Discrimination only tarnishes the country's image. The owner doesn't understand that his business relies on tourists,' wrote another.
However, some netizens stated that Japan has unwritten rules that tourists must adhere to. 'Anything that shows the shoulders is considered revealing in Japan; it's very rare for Japanese women to wear sleeveless tops,' wrote one netizen.
Japan has become the most popular foreign tourist destination for Chinese tourists due to its more lenient visa policies, a weaker yen, and a growing interest in unique experiences such as culinary tourism. Japan welcomed 31.65 million foreign tourists between January and September, a 17.7 percent increase from the previous year, as reported by Kyodo News. China topped the list with approximately 7.49 million tourists, a 42.7 percent increase from the previous year.
