1. BMKG: New Cyclone Seed Brings Heavy Rainfall to Bali, Nusa Tenggara
Tropical Cyclone Seed 96S will bring moderate to heavy rainfall in West Nusa Tenggara and East Nusa Tenggara, while blowing strong winds to the southern coast of Bali and East Nusa Tenggara.
The same tropical cyclone seed is predicted to generate moderate high waves (1.25 - 2.50 meters) in the waters south of Central Java to East Java, the Indian Ocean south of Central Java to Yogyakarta, the southern waters of Lombok to Timor Island, and the Savu Sea.
It is highly likely that 2.50 - 4.00 meter high waves will occur in the southern part of the Bali Strait and the Indian Ocean south of East Java to East Nusa Tenggara.
The information is derived from the Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency's (BMKG) daily weather forecast released on Friday.
2. Probe Sought Into TNI Violence Against Free Aceh Movement Flag Bearers
The Executive Director of Amnesty International Indonesia, Usman Hamid, has called for an independent investigation into violence by the Indonesian National Armed Forces (TNI) against Acehnese civilians displaying the symbols of the Free Aceh Movement (GAM).
The incident occurred during a TNI-led operation targeting a convoy carrying the GAM flag in Krueng Mane, North Aceh, on the night of Thursday, December 25, 2025. Usman described the raid as a serious human rights violation.
“The repressive actions allegedly carried out by joint TNI and police forces against volunteers distributing aid to Aceh Tamiang reflect an abuse of power. The humanitarian initiative was met with a raid, flag confiscation, beatings, kicks, and threats with weapons,” Usman said in a statement on Friday, December 26.
Several videos circulating on social media appear to show security personnel beating volunteers, with some victims sustaining head injuries from rifle butts.
3. Former PM Says Aceh Shielded Malaysia From Cyclone That Triggered Disasters
Former Malaysian Prime Minister Mahathir Mohamad has described Indonesia’s Aceh province as a “protector” that has shielded Malaysia from natural disasters, referring to the impact of Tropical Cyclone Senyar, which triggered floods and landslides across Aceh, North Sumatra, and West Sumatra in late November 2025.
“Actually, we were safe. In Aceh, thousands of people died. In Malaysia, not a single person died. The reason is that Aceh protects Malaysia,” Mahathir said in a video posted on his Facebook and X accounts on Thursday, December 25, 2025.
Mahathir said the cyclone, which formed over the Indian Ocean, failed to reach Malaysia because it was blocked by the island of Sumatra. “Aceh is a protective shield that saves Malaysia,” he said.
He added that while Aceh is now bearing the brunt of the disaster, Malaysia has a moral responsibility to help. According to Mahathir, Aceh, North Sumatra, and West Sumatra have long acted as a natural barrier that shields Malaysia from major natural calamities.
