TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The government of China asserted on Tuesday that Japan must demonstrate “concrete actions” before Beijing will consider a dialogue with Tokyo. This demand comes in response to newly elected Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi’s stated openness to bilateral talks.
According to a CNA report, although Takaichi declared a day after her landslide election victory that Japan was “open to various dialogues,” Beijing deemed the statement insufficient and effectively rejected the overture.
Tensions between the two nations have escalated since Takaichi’s comments last November, suggesting that Tokyo could intervene militarily if China attacked Taiwan. Beijing maintains that Takaichi’s remarks have prolonged a long-standing diplomatic deadlock.
Beijing’s Conditions for Resuming Dialogue
According to China Daily, Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Lin Jian stated that genuine dialogue must be built on mutual respect. “No one would accept dialogue when one side talks about dialogue while engaging in confrontation with the other,” Lin told reporters.
Lin emphasized that Tokyo must demonstrate its sincerity through concrete actions, specifically by retracting Takaichi's comments on Taiwan. He added that if Japan truly wants to develop a mutually beneficial strategic relationship with China, the path is simple and clear: retract Sanae Takaichi's erroneous remarks on Taiwan.
He added that Japan also needs to adhere to the four political documents that form the foundation of relations between the two countries and respect Japan's previously agreed-upon political commitments. According to Lin, retracting the controversial statement is the necessary first step toward establishing a genuine dialogue.
Impact on Bilateral Relations
Beijing has recently taken steps to demonstrate its dissatisfaction with Tokyo's policies, including advising its citizens to postpone travel to Japan and reportedly halting imports of Japanese seafood. These actions underscore the strain on social and economic relations between the two countries.
Although Takaichi expressed openness to dialogue, China believes that without a concrete change from her previous statements, diplomatic efforts will continue to face obstacles.
